Have you ever been confused by the many and various lifestyles exhibited throughout the nations of this world, and wished that you could somehow come to a simple, basic understanding about what is really the best way to live? Then you need go no further than God’s Word to find it out, because there is only one real way to live and that is by "every word that comes forth from the mouth of God" (Matt. 4:4). And God has told us in His Word that His instructions are not difficult nor grievous (1 Jn. 5:3), the only thing that is likely to make them so is our stubborn resistance to accept them and apply them to our lives. This resistance on the part of mankind is the reason for all the confusion and heartache that we so often suffer from, and it is utterly surprising the quantity and quality of the peace and joy one can experience when they finally surrender themselves to the Lordship of Jesus Christ. But those who are not convinced will continue to struggle against God, and thus we end up with two basic lifestyles; the simple and true one that God has given us, and all the others that fall into the same category of disobedience and error.
Most people who have shown any interest in the confusing way that many who profess a religious lifestyle live, will confess to being mystified and sometimes disillusioned by their observations. Those who are familiar with the Bible will often remark, how can a person who claims to be religious think, speak or act that way? It is easily recognizable that the various so-called Christian lifestyles exhibited throughout the world are greatly influenced by this world’s system or the society or community in which a particular person or group resides.
So, what can we conclude represents a proper Christian lifestyle? The following Scriptures illustrate the two basic lifestyles, mentioned in paragraph one, that we have to choose from that greatly effects, not only the life we are presently living, but the life we will live throughout all eternity. The fact that the outcome of the choice we make is so drastic, makes the consideration of this issue of extreme importance.
1 PETER 1:13-19.... So brace up your minds; be sober (circumspect, morally alert); set your hope wholly and unchangeably on the grace (divine favor) that is coming to you when Jesus Christ (the Messiah) is revealed. [Live] as children of obedience [to God]; do not conform yourselves to the evil desires [that governed you] in your former ignorance [when you did not know the requirements of the Gospel]. But as the one Who called you is holy, you yourselves also be holy in all your conduct and manner of living. For it is written, You shall be holy, for I am holy. [Lev. 11:44,45.]
17And if you call upon Him as [your] Father Who judges each one impartially according to what he does, [then] you should conduct yourselves with true reverence throughout the time of your temporary residence [on the earth, whether long or short]. You must know (recognize) that you were redeemed (ransomed) from the useless (fruitless) way of living inherited by tradition from [your] forefathers, not with corruptible things [such as] silver and gold, but [you were purchased] with the precious blood of Christ (the Messiah), like that of a [sacrificial] lamb without blemish or spot.
The above two paragraphs tell us that we can either choose to live in obedience to God or choose or continue to live according to the useless and/or fruitless way of the God-rejecting society that we live in. Simply put this means that we have the option to either live for God and what He wants, or live for our self and what we want. Before we can make an intelligent choice between the two, we need to be made aware that we were born into this world separated and alienated from God and destined for hell. If we wish to be reconciled to God and spend eternity with Him and avoid the eternal torments of the other place, then we have to be, as Jesus said, "I assure you, most solemnly I tell you, that unless a person is born again (anew, from above), he cannot ever see (know, be acquainted with, and experience) the kingdom of God" (Jn. 3:3).
When we become convinced that we need to and want to be reconciled to God, then we need to know that the only way that this can happen is by our placing wholehearted faith, trust and reliance upon Christ’s death on the cross as having paid the death penalty that we owed because of our lawlessness. When we come to that conclusion and ask God to make us His obedient child, the Holy Spirit causes us to be born again or a second time and takes up His residence within our own spirit – in this manner we become a child of God through faith in Jesus Christ.
This is only the beginning of our new life, and in order to grow up right and live right we need to be taught by the Holy Spirit and learn how to live according to God’s instructions from His Word the Bible. We should make time every day to prayerfully read God’s Word in an effort to learn how to avoid making mistakes because of our ignorance of the right way to conduct ourselves that can lead to some very devastating consequences. As Proverbs 2:1-15 so pointedly states, "My son, if you will receive my words and treasure up my commandments within you, making your ear attentive to skillful and godly Wisdom and inclining and directing your heart and mind to understanding [applying all your powers to the quest for it]; yes, if you cry out for insight and raise your voice for understanding, if you seek [Wisdom] as for silver and search for skillful and godly Wisdom as for hidden treasures, then you will understand the reverent and worshipful fear of the Lord and find the knowledge of [our omniscient] God. [Prov. 1:7.] For the Lord gives skillful and godly Wisdom; from His mouth come knowledge and understanding. He hides away sound and godly Wisdom and stores it for the righteous (those who are upright and in right standing with Him); He is a shield to those who walk uprightly and in integrity, that He may guard the paths of justice; yes, He preserves the way of His saints. [1 Sam. 2:9; Ps. 66:8,9.] Then you will understand righteousness, justice, and fair dealing [in every area and relation]; yes, you will understand every good path. For skillful and godly Wisdom shall enter into your heart, and knowledge shall be pleasant to you. Discretion shall watch over you, understanding shall keep you, to deliver you from the way of evil and the evil men, from men who speak perverse things and are liars, men who forsake the paths of uprightness to walk in the ways of darkness, who rejoice to do evil and delight in the perverseness of evil, who are crooked in their ways, wayward and devious in their paths."
God promises this long list of magnificent benefits only to those who discipline themselves to follow His conditions and instructions. Those who neglect God’s requirements will find themselves becoming more and more influenced by this ungodly world system, and this is why we are witnessing such astonishing behavior among people who call themselves Christians. People who claim that they have tried but can’t live God’s way have no excuse or are ill-informed, because God has provided us with everything that we need, as the apostle Peter proclaims. "Simon Peter, a servant and apostle (special messenger) of Jesus Christ, to those who have received (obtained an equal privilege of) like precious faith with ourselves in and through the righteousness of our God and Savior Jesus Christ: May grace (God's favor) and peace (which is perfect well-being, all necessary good, all spiritual prosperity, and freedom from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts) be multiplied to you in [the full, personal, precise, and correct] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. For His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue). By means of these He has bestowed on us His precious and exceedingly great promises, so that through them you may escape [by flight] from the moral decay (rottenness and corruption) that is in the world because of covetousness (lust and greed), and become sharers (partakers) of the divine nature" (2 Peter 1:1-4).
I know how difficult it is to learn to trust or rely completely upon Jesus and look to Him and watch for Him to bring something to our attention instead of trying to find a solution on our own. We have to learn to take everything to the Lord in prayer: "Listen to my words, O Lord, give heed to my sighing and groaning. Hear the sound of my cry, my King and my God, for to You do I pray. In the morning You hear my voice, O Lord; in the morning I prepare [a prayer, a sacrifice] for You and watch and wait [for You to speak to my heart]" (Ps. 5:1-3). As we cultivate this kind of approach and attitude of heart, we will find the indwelling Holy Spirit, usually in small ways, bringing things to our attention that we can recognize as something that we didn’t produce ourselves but something that was given unto us or that we received from some other source.
If you are having difficulty with this, I would suggest that you go back to our Outline For Building-up And Equipping The Body Of Christ which is on the left side of every page, and carefully and prayerfully read section "IC" on Dwelling in Christ by faith for victorious living until you are firmly convinced that what God promises and instructs us in those portions of Scripture can become something you can experience. When you become convinced in your heart (Rom. 10:10) concerning God’s promises, you will find yourself beginning to recognize God injecting thoughts or bringing things to your attention, by the Holy Spirit, into your mind and heart; you can easily dismiss them if you don’t take time to consider and examine them.
We have need to inject a word of caution in pursuing this course of action because we can make honest mistakes, and we can be deceived by wrong sources; so, we need to check out everything with God’s Word, and that’s what this website is all about! If you need help with this, check out section "IV" on Keep the church informed about the dangers Christians face in our outline.
We are living in a very difficult and dangerous time when deception is rampant; the only source of information and help that we can have complete confidence in is God’s Written Word and the indwelling Holy Spirit. Before we accept anything as legitimate it needs to be checked out and approved by clear instructions from the Bible, there is no substitute for being firmly grounded in an understanding of God’s Word. So decide now to be Jesus’ disciple and to follow Him wholeheartedly. One of Satan’s deadliest traps is to get God’s people to dwell upon things contrary to God’s instructions until they convince themselves that it’s all right to follow or accept this course of action or line of reasoning even though the Bible is clearly against it; so keep your mind set upon what is acceptable to God, and not upon what you know to be displeasing to Him. The things that we set our minds upon will end up directing the course of our life, the lifestyle that we live and the place where we live it.
