The most important decision that every human being has to make is whether they are going to know and serve God or ignore Him, and the only way that we can get to know Him is through His Word, the Bible, as ministered by the Holy Spirit. When we set our desire upon knowing God and His will for our lives, we immediately enter into conflict with Satan and his evil world system. Therefore, we need to learn not only about God, but also how Satan opposes us when we attempt to learn about God. If we neglect either one, confusion and disorder will result, and this is the main reason for the chaotic state that this world suffers from.
T. A. McMahon, at The Berean Call, in his book Temporal Delusion, describes in detail some of the causes for the confusion that exists in the hearts and minds of many of God people. We will attempt, in this article, to show from God’s Word the major cause for the confusion and how it usually develops, even as it did in the days of the early Church.
HEBREWS 5:5-14.... So too Christ (the Messiah) did not exalt Himself to be made a high priest, but was appointed and exalted by Him Who said to Him, You are My Son; today I have begotten You; [Ps. 2:7.] As He says also in another place, You are a Priest [appointed] forever after the order (with the rank) of Melchizedek. [Ps. 110:4.]
7In the days of His flesh [Jesus] offered up definite, special petitions [for that which He not only wanted but needed] and supplications with strong crying and tears to Him Who was [always] able to save Him [out] from death, and He was heard because of His reverence toward God [His godly fear, His piety, in that He shrank from the horrors of separation from the bright presence of the Father]. Although He was a Son, He learned [active, special] obedience through what He suffered and, [His completed experience] making Him perfectly [equipped], He became the Author and Source of eternal salvation to all those who give heed and obey Him, [Isa. 45:17.] Being designated and recognized and saluted by God as High Priest after the order (with the rank) of Melchizedek. [Ps. 110:4.]
11Concerning this we have much to say which is hard to explain, since you have become dull in your [spiritual] hearing and sluggish [even slothful in achieving spiritual insight]. For even though by this time you ought to be teaching others, you actually need someone to teach you over again the very first principles of God's Word. You have come to need milk, not solid food. For everyone who continues to feed on milk is obviously inexperienced and unskilled in the doctrine of righteousness (of conformity to the divine will in purpose, thought, and action), for he is a mere infant [not able to talk yet]! But solid food is for full-grown men, for those whose senses and mental faculties are trained by practice to discriminate and distinguish between what is morally good and noble and what is evil and contrary either to divine or human law.
Here’s the major cause for our confusion, and as the writer of the book of Hebrews says – it is hard to explain! These Christians, as well as the majority of today’s Church, had and have neglected to gain an appropriate knowledge of God and His Word, and thus lacked the ability to properly discern between right and wrong thoughts, words and actions. When we think or look upon wrong things they will influence us to act them out in our own lives, and if we are ignorant of God’s instructions to avoid them they will become a part of our life. The way that our enemy, Satan, gets involved in this process is to inject contrary, but enticing, human wisdom and reasoning into our minds through all the avenues of approach that he has successfully brought under his control in this world system. Many of these people and organizations are presently recognized as Christian, but they have been cleverly deceived by Satan and are being used to deceive and destroy others; by reading Tom’s book Temporal Delusion, you will be alerted to some of these people and organizations to avoid.
HEBREWS 6:1-2.... Therefore let us go on and get past the elementary stage in the teachings and doctrine of Christ (the Messiah), advancing steadily toward the completeness and perfection that belong to spiritual maturity. Let us not again be laying the foundation of repentance and abandonment of dead works (dead formalism) and of the faith [by which you turned] to God, with teachings about purifying, the laying on of hands, the resurrection from the dead, and eternal judgment and punishment. [These are all matters of which you should have been fully aware long, long ago.]
The above paragraph explains to us what we must do if we hope to escape Satan’s deception, but most people who call themselves Christians neglect this until they get into trouble, and then they go looking to others for solutions, instead of the Word of God that they should have been studying in the first place. Unfortunately, when we look to other people we are most likely to find those who have themselves been deceived by false teachings and practices, and thus we end up in a worse state than before. When a person gets into this kind of a condition, their only hope of finding the right solution is to get back to God and His Word; if they have a faithful Christian friend who will help and encourage them in their personal Bible study, they are fortunate indeed.
All Christians, whether they are just babes in Christ or more mature, will experience problems and difficulties, but, the more mature Christian will be better able to handle them correctly than the younger Christian because he has a better knowledge, understanding and relationship with God. Growing up correctly or, discipleship takes time and training, so we can’t afford to neglect time or effort – we need to daily work toward maturity. Let’s look at an example that Jesus gave that parallels the situation that these Hebrews were in of deviating from faith and allegiance to God (Heb. 6:3-6), and illustrates the need for us to be well rooted and grounded in Christ (Jn. 15:1-10).
MATTHEW 13:18-23.... Listen then to the [meaning of the] parable of the sower: While anyone is hearing the Word of the kingdom and does not grasp and comprehend it, the evil one comes and snatches away what was sown in his heart. This is what was sown along the roadside. As for what was sown on thin (rocky) soil, this is he who hears the Word and at once welcomes and accepts it with joy; Yet it has no real root in him, but is temporary (inconstant, lasts but a little while); and when affliction or trouble or persecution comes on account of the Word, at once he is caused to stumble [he is repelled and begins to distrust and desert Him Whom he ought to trust and obey] and he falls away. As for what was sown among thorns, this is he who hears the Word, but the cares of the world and the pleasure and delight and glamour and deceitfulness of riches choke and suffocate the Word, and it yields no fruit. As for what was sown on good soil, this is he who hears the Word and grasps and comprehends it; he indeed bears fruit and yields in one case a hundred times as much as was sown, in another sixty times as much, and in another thirty.
HEBREWS 6:3-7:1.... If indeed God permits, we will [now] proceed [to advanced teaching]. For it is impossible [to restore and bring again to repentance] those who have been once for all enlightened, who have consciously tasted the heavenly gift and have become sharers of the Holy Spirit, and have felt how good the Word of God is and the mighty powers of the age and world to come, if they then deviate from the faith and turn away from their allegiance – [it is impossible] to bring them back to repentance, for (because, while, as long as) they nail upon the cross the Son of God afresh [as far as they are concerned] and are holding [Him] up to contempt and shame and public disgrace. For the soil which has drunk the rain that repeatedly falls upon it and produces vegetation useful to those for whose benefit it is cultivated partakes of a blessing from God. But if [that same soil] persistently bears thorns and thistles, it is considered worthless and near to being cursed, whose end is to be burned. [Gen. 3:17,18.]
To remain true to God in all areas of our life requires a personal commitment to God, diligent persistence, and a watchful eye out for Satan’s deceptions; recognizing that a little divergence from God’s Word will only lead to more and more compromising until we find ourselves questioning and doubting God’s truth.
9Even though we speak this way, yet in your case, beloved, we are now firmly convinced of better things that are near to salvation and accompany it. For God is not unrighteous to forget or overlook your labor and the love which you have shown for His name's sake in ministering to the needs of the saints (His own consecrated people), as you still do. But we do [strongly and earnestly] desire for each of you to show the same diligence and sincerity [all the way through] in realizing and enjoying the full assurance and development of [your] hope until the end, in order that you may not grow disinterested and become [spiritual] sluggards, but imitators, behaving as do those who through faith (by their leaning of the entire personality on God in Christ in absolute trust and confidence in His power, wisdom, and goodness) and by practice of patient endurance and waiting are [now] inheriting the promises.
13For when God made [His] promise to Abraham, He swore by Himself, since He had no one greater by whom to swear, saying, Blessing I certainly will bless you and multiplying I will multiply you. [Gen. 22:16,17.] And so it was that he [Abraham], having waited long and endured patiently, realized and obtained [in the birth of Isaac as a pledge of what was to come] what God had promised him. Men indeed swear by a greater [than themselves], and with them in all disputes the oath taken for confirmation is final [ending strife]. Accordingly God also, in His desire to show more convincingly and beyond doubt to those who were to inherit the promise the unchangeableness of His purpose and plan, intervened (mediated) with an oath. This was so that, by two unchangeable things [His promise and His oath] in which it is impossible for God ever to prove false or deceive us, we who have fled [to Him] for refuge might have mighty indwelling strength and strong encouragement to grasp and hold fast the hope appointed for us and set before [us]. [Now] we have this [hope] as a sure and steadfast anchor of the soul [it cannot slip and it cannot break down under whoever steps out upon it--a hope] that reaches farther and enters into [the very certainty of the Presence] within the veil, [Lev. 16:2.] Where Jesus has entered in for us [in advance], a Forerunner having become a High Priest forever after the order (with the rank) of Melchizedek. [Ps. 110:4.]
This is the only way to truly live a peaceful and enjoyable life in Christ! The following portions of Scripture from the book of Hebrews contain additional warnings to God’s people not to neglect to grow up in Christ Jesus: (Hebrews 2:1-4; 3:7-14; 4:1-3; 10:19-11:6; 11:1-6; 11:35-40; 12:1-17; 12:25-29)
The following quote is from The Institute for Creation Research – Days of Praise Tuesday, January 17, 2012.
"And when the queen of Sheba heard of the fame of Solomon concerning the name of the Lord, she came to prove him with hard questions." (1 Kings 10:1)A thousand years after the famous visit of Sheba’s queen to the court of King Solomon, Jesus made a remarkable spiritual application of her experience. "The queen of the south shall rise up in the judgement with this generation, and shall condemn it: for she came from the uttermost parts of the earth to hear the wisdom of Solomon; and, behold, a greater than Solomon is here" )Matthew 12:42).
Solomon had prayed for wisdom, and the Lord gave him such legendary wisdom that the news even reached the distant land of Sheba, south of Ethiopia. We do not know what hard questions were confronting Sheba’s queen at the time, but she finally decided she must find their solutions through Solomon and his God. God honored her searching faith, "and Solomon told her all her questions," so that she could testify that "the half was not told me. . . . Blessed be the Lord thy God" (1 Kings 10:3, 7, 9).
In Jesus Christ "are hid all the treasures of wisdom and knowledge" (Colossians 2:3). He who had given Solomon his great wisdom promises us that "if any of you lack wisdom, let him ask of God, that giveth to all men liberally, and upbraideth not; and it shall be given him" (James 1:5).
Truly the queen of Sheba will be a witness against our present generation in the coming day of judgement. People today turn to every variety of Humanistic counselors for their training and guidance, but refuse to come to the one who is "made unto us wisdom" (1 Corinthians 1:30). The "Wonderful Counselor" (Isaiah 9:6), who is far greater than Solomon, who said "I am . . . the truth" (John 14:6), and who promises that "the truth shall make you free" (8:32), is still inviting all from the uttermost parts of the earth to come. 2 PETER 2:1-3; 17-22.... But also [in those days] there arose false prophets among the people, just as there will be false teachers among yourselves, who will subtly and stealthily introduce heretical doctrines (destructive heresies), even denying and disowning the Master Who bought them, bringing upon themselves swift destruction. And many will follow their immoral ways and lascivious doings; because of them the true Way will be maligned and defamed. And in their covetousness (lust, greed) they will exploit you with false (cunning) arguments. From of old the sentence [of condemnation] for them has not been idle; their destruction (eternal misery) has not been asleep. . . . 17These are springs without water and mists driven along before a tempest, for whom is reserved forever the gloom of darkness. For uttering loud boasts of folly, they beguile and lure with lustful desires of the flesh those who are barely escaping from them who are wrongdoers. They promise them liberty, when they themselves are the slaves of depravity and defilement--for by whatever anyone is made inferior or worse or is overcome, to that [person or thing] he is enslaved. For if, after they have escaped the pollutions of the world through [the full, personal] knowledge of our Lord and Savior Jesus Christ, they again become entangled in them and are overcome, their last condition is worse [for them] than the first. For never to have obtained a [full, personal] knowledge of the way of righteousness would have been better for them than, having obtained [such knowledge], to turn back from the holy commandment which was [verbally] delivered to them. There has befallen them the thing spoken of in the true proverb, The dog turns back to his own vomit, and, The sow is washed only to wallow again in the mire. [Prov. 26:11.]
Since Satan uses this present world system, which is largely under his control, to deceive and lead astray, we can understand why God has warned us that we should expect opposition from this system when we remain faithful to God. We also need knowledge to recognize those segments of our society that are under Satan’s control so that we can avoid them and not be used by them to advance Satan’s plan. The following portions of Scripture tell us in no uncertain terms that the majority of this world is our enemy.
JOHN 14:30).... I will not talk with you much more, for the prince (evil genius, ruler) of the world is coming. And he has no claim on Me. [He has nothing in common with Me; there is nothing in Me that belongs to him, and he has no power over Me.]
JOHN 15:18-21.... If the world hates you, know that it hated Me before it hated you. If you belonged to the world, the world would treat you with affection and would love you as its own. But because you are not of the world [no longer one with it], but I have chosen (selected) you out of the world, the world hates (detests) you. Remember that I told you, A servant is not greater than his master [is not superior to him]. If they persecuted Me, they will also persecute you; if they kept My word and obeyed My teachings, they will also keep and obey yours. But they will do all this to you [inflict all this suffering on you] because of [your bearing] My name and on My account, for they do not know or understand the one Who sent Me.
JAMES 4:3-4.... [Or] you do ask [God for them] and yet fail to receive, because you ask with wrong purpose and evil, selfish motives. Your intention is [when you get what you desire] to spend it in sensual pleasures. You [are like] unfaithful wives [having illicit love affairs with the world and breaking your marriage vow to God]! Do you not know that being the world's friend is being God's enemy? So whoever chooses to be a friend of the world takes his stand as an enemy of God.
1 JOHN 2:15-17.... Do not love or cherish the world or the things that are in the world. If anyone loves the world, love for the Father is not in him. For all that is in the world--the lust of the flesh [craving for sensual gratification] and the lust of the eyes [greedy longings of the mind] and the pride of life [assurance in one's own resources or in the stability of earthly things]--these do not come from the Father but are from the world [itself]. And the world passes away and disappears, and with it the forbidden cravings (the passionate desires, the lust) of it; but he who does the will of God and carries out His purposes in his life abides (remains) forever.
The natural tendency for people to conform to their surrounding society is almost unescapable unless one is more influenced by what God has declared in His Word. The nation of Israel was and is an example of people who rejected God’s Word for human reasoning and as a result God had to discipline them several times, sent them into a Babylon captivity for seventy years, and finally disbursed them throughout the world. The professing Church has suffered from the same disobedience, had its own Babylon captivity during the so-called dark ages (about A. D. 700 to 1500), and now seems headed into the clutches of the antichrist and a one-world Church captivity.
PSALM 81:13.... Oh, that My people would listen to Me, that Israel would walk in My ways!
ROMANS 12:2.... Do not be conformed to this world (this age), [fashioned after and adapted to its external, superficial customs], but be transformed (changed) by the [entire] renewal of your mind [by its new ideals and its new attitude], so that you may prove [for yourselves] what is the good and acceptable and perfect will of God, even the thing which is good and acceptable and perfect [in His sight for you].
