The following is a brief, general overview of what God has revealed to us in His Word, the Bible, about life. We can consider it as the framework or border of a marvelous word-picture that we add pieces and details to as we prayerfully study the Bible under the guidance of the Holy Spirit.
God has provided for us through Jesus Christ our Lord, everything that we need to live a life that pleases Him; Peter put it this way. "May grace (God's favor) and peace (which is perfect well-being, all necessary good, all spiritual prosperity, and freedom from fears and agitating passions and moral conflicts) be multiplied to you in [the full, personal, precise, and correct] knowledge of God and of Jesus our Lord. For His divine power has bestowed upon us all things that [are requisite and suited] to life and godliness, through the [full, personal] knowledge of Him Who called us by and to His own glory and excellence (virtue)" (2 Peter 1:2-3). Jesus said, "I am the Way and the Truth and the Life; no one comes to the Father except by (through) Me" (John 14:6). So, Jesus is everything to us, He is the only way to the Father, He is the embodiment of all truth, and He is the Savior and keeper of all our life! So let’s begin to put some of the pieces in their proper place.
Where do we go when we need help? Jesus pointed the way, "Come to Me, all you who labor and are heavy-laden and overburdened, and I will cause you to rest. [I will ease and relieve and refresh your souls.] Take My yoke upon you and learn of Me, for I am gentle (meek) and humble (lowly) in heart, and you will find rest ( relief and ease and refreshment and recreation and blessed quiet) for your souls. [Jer. 6:16] For My yoke is wholesome (useful, good--not harsh, hard, sharp, or pressing, but comfortable, gracious, and pleasant), and My burden is light and easy to be borne" (Matt. 11:28-30).
What can we expect to receive? "Inasmuch then as we have a great High Priest Who has [already] ascended and passed through the heavens, Jesus the Son of God, let us hold fast our confession [of faith in Him]. For we do not have a High Priest Who is unable to understand and sympathize and have a shared feeling with our weaknesses and infirmities and liability to the assaults of temptation, but one Who has been tempted in every respect as we are, yet without sinning. Let us then fearlessly and confidently and boldly draw near to the throne of grace (the throne of God's unmerited favor to us sinners), that we may receive mercy [for our failures] and find grace to help in good time for every need [appropriate help and well-timed help, coming just when we need it]" (Heb. 4:14-16).
Have you ever asked yourself, what have I really accomplished, or, has my life really been worth living? Have I really learned the essence of what living is all about and have I applied them to my life? So much of our time is spent learning about life and how we are to live it; have we used this time beneficially, and have we acquired the right or correct information to enable us to live properly?
God has revealed to us, in the Bible, all the necessary elements and information that make for a complete and satisfying life, it just remains for us to search them out and live by them. The sixty-six books of the Bible should be our final authority and standard in assessing all other information, because it is the Truth of God as revealed to His servants (1 Cor. 2:12-13; 2 Tim. 3:14-17; 2 Peter 1:20-21). Moses is believed to have compiled the first five books of the Bible called the Pentateuch. The Bible was written by about 40 different inspired authors, during a period of about 1500 years, covering about 4000 years of history. None of the original manuscripts are known to be in existence, but of these original writings Evangelical Christianity has historically believed them to be the very words of God given to men and completely free of error. Jesus fully authenticated the Old Testament Scriptures and used and taught them throughout His earthly ministry (Luke 24:25-47).
In the first three chapters of Genesis God tells us how He created the universe and all that is within it, also, how Satan persuaded Adam and Eve to disobey God. God had a wonderful plan for His creation, but Satan and some of the angels decided that they would rather live for themselves than for God and they rebelled against our creator. Sometime later Satan deceived Eve into disregarding God’s instructions and she in turn persuaded Adam to join in her disobedience. God had warned Adam: "And the Lord God commanded the man, saying, You may freely eat of every tree of the garden; but of the tree of the knowledge of good and evil and blessing and calamity you shall not eat, for in the day that you eat of it you shall surely die" (Gen. 2:16-17). As a result of their disobedience the sentence of both physical and spiritual death (which is separation from God) passed to Adam and Eve and all their descendants. We are informed in the second, third, and fourth chapters that God continued to make Himself and His will known to them even though they had already made some disastrous mistakes.
The point we wish to establish is, that God did not give up on mankind because they made mistakes, He still wanted to make Himself known and to work with them to correct the situation, and to continue with His plans for them. The whole Bible makes it clear that this is God’s intention, and that if there is any lack of a knowledge of God and His requirements it’s man’s fault and not God’s. There are several instances in Scripture where God pleads with His people to turn from their wicked ways and back to Him, but our irrational inclination is to blame God for our blindness and misery, and to continue in our selfish pursuits instead of seeking and obeying God.
The more we disregard God the more blind we become, God knows this even if we don’t. Therefore God had to have a plan whereby He could reveal Himself and His will to those who desired to know Him – the Bible is the result of that plan. Here is how God describes it, "For I know the thoughts and plans that I have for you, says the Lord, thoughts and plans for welfare and peace and not for evil, to give you hope in your final outcome. Then you will call upon Me, and you will come and pray to Me, and I will hear and heed you. Then you will seek Me, inquire for, and require Me [as a vital necessity] and find Me when you search for Me with all your heart" [Deut. 4:29-30] (Jer. 29:11-13). Therefore, those who wish to know God and His will must search the Scriptures that He inspired, preserved and gave to us – there is no other way or information available to us. So we see how important and vital God’s Word is, and how foolish it is to look anywhere else!
Someone may ask, how do we know that there is no other way or information available to us? Compare anything you know of or can find with the Bible, nothing even comes close -- the Bible is superior in countless ways. Not that we have to personally examine every contender; we have scholars, past and present standing by, that have critically appraised everything the world has presented, and all other sources of information and knowledge have all been shown seriously lacking in comparison to the Word of God. The devil’s current popular attempt to discredit the Bible is through Eastern Mysticism and other Occult phenomena. But no other source answers all the questions about life as fully, completely and satisfyingly as the Bible does!
Someone else may ask, why did God take so long to fully reveal Himself and His plan, why didn’t He just step down out of heaven and say I’m God and here’s a manual to live by, why did He use human writers over so long a period of time? The Bible was written by about 40 different inspired authors, during a period of about 1500 years, covering about 4000 years of history. As writer after writer added to the Holy Writ, a mountain of indisputable evidence began to accumulate, without any contradictions and with the capability of being checked out by historians and archeologists, and is well proven by fulfilled prophesy. We have had the completed Bible now for about 1900 years. The Bible has probably been examined and scrutinized by more scholars than any other material ever written. Any sincere person that will take the time to carefully examine the Bible cannot help but be overwhelmed by the fulness and accuracy of the revelation contained therein. Thus, God has proven Himself to any rational human being through His written Word – it probably could not have been done any other way!
Others may ask, why did God choose the Bible as His method of revealing Himself? Probably because man is so naturally inclined to disregard God and to seek his own will that God chose to gather together mountains of evidence, concluding with Christ and the Apostles, of His goodwill for man so that anyone who took the time to examine it would be overwhelmed by the magnitude of His evidence, wisdom, goodness, power and ability. Also, we need the Bible to constantly refer to, so that we don’t forget, and it has been used by multitudes to bring them into a right relationship with God!
It took about sixty-five years from the resurrection of Christ until the full revelation of the Truth as God wanted us to have it was finished – we should learn to know it, love it, cherish it, live by it, protect it, and proclaim it!
"In the beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created the heavens and the earth" (Gen. 1:1). God created the cosmos and then took some of the elements thereof and created living life forms and formed and fashioned a perfect environment for them to live in. He apparently had and has a perfect civilization in mind where everyone worked and co-operated with Him to make life an amazingly wonderful and beautiful experience; in the Bible He calls it the Kingdom of God or of heaven.
God wants and desires creatures that He has created to willfully volunteer to help Him in building His kingdom, so he created them all, angels and humans, as free-agents – able to live for Him or for themselves. As far as we know, Satan was the first to make the decision to live for himself instead of for God, and Adam was soon enticed to followed him (Gen. 3:1-19).
Thus, God’s wonderful plan had been rejected by both angels and humans, and the terrible consequences of those decisions have spoiled and desecrated God’s original plan and works, but God, all the time, had a backup plan in place – God was not surprised, He knew what was going to happen (1 Peter 1:18-20). So all the ugliness, pain and suffering that we see and experience in today’s world is the result of creatures that were first created in God’s image, but eventually rejected and rebelled against Him.
It’s difficult for us to envision a perfect environment, because we have never seen or experienced anything that was perfect, except God Himself. But if you have ever had something that you loved very dearly destroyed by an uncaring individual, then you can understand how God must have felt when His own created creatures turned against Him and ended up destroying a part of His wondrous plan.
God is still building His Kingdom, but He is using redeemed, born-again individuals who have willingly chosen to surrender themselves to His Lordship, and to live for Him instead of themselves – just the opposite of what Satan and Adam chose to do. The most amazing aspect of these new individuals is that they were not fit or capable of being a part of God’s plan in their original condition. Again, God knew this and a part of His plan included a process of redemption wherein God’s Son, Jesus Christ our Lord, suffered our death penalty, in our place, so that when we believe and accept His redeeming sacrifice and Lordship, we are made acceptable to God to work with Him in His Kingdom (Matt. 16:24-26; 1 Peter 1:13-23; 2 Cor. 5:15-21; Gal. 2:20). So the life that we are now living in physical bodies is a time for testing, preparing and training for an eternity living and working with God. This is what life is all about!
There is nothing that can come close to being as marvelous, magnificent and glorious to consider as this offer that God has given us; it’s the height of foolishness to turn down His gracious offer, and choose to live for any other reason or goal!
The promises of God are usually conditional, meaning, that if we will do our part, God will fulfill His promise. The importance of knowing the Word of God and living by it are emphasized by Jesus’ following statement: "So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free" (John 8:31-32). As we study and apply God’s Word to our lives we learn to trust Jesus Christ our Lord with every aspect of our lives, and rest in the help and comfort that only He can give. Thus, we can truly be free from the anxiety and frustrations of this Christ rejecting world system. This is a learning and growing process, and this is what our website is all about; we call it, Building Up And Equipping The Body Of Christ.
