Before we begin to examine the solution to this worldwide dilemma of darkness, we need to give a brief description of what we mean by darkness. As the verses below indicate, Satan is the cause and perpetrator of this darkness which prevents people from recognizing the truth of God’s Word, and keeps them in bondage to his kingdom of lawlessness and strife. Most people do not stop to consider that Satan has had about six thousand years to develop his deceptive and despicable strategy, philosophy, organizations and people that he is presently using in an attempt to destroy Christians and thus Christianity. Satan is trying to take control of the whole world, and will for a short while be successful in doing so. He has used the world’s rulers that he could deceive, into actually fighting against God in an attempt to take control over the whole world. Over the last six thousand years Satan has used several different approaches and methods; on many occasions he has used force and as a result the world has been almost continually at war in some form or other. Over the last one hundred years he has also been perfecting, and is now using very effectively, because of the tremendous increase in transportation and communication, the use of philosophical deception – undermining the truth of God’s Word through the teachings and technics of those who distort and contradict what God has revealed unto us in the Bible.
Of course, all of this started back in the garden of Eden with the deception of Eve, and has been traced by numerous historians and authors who have researched and documented the multitude of people, groups, organizations and nations that Satan has used along with many of their methods, technics and practices they have employed – this website has several pages that explore some of these tools of Satan. A good book to read if you desire more information is entitled Temporal Delusion, written by Tom McMahon at The Berean Call.
Now let’s take a brief look at what God has to say about all of this in His Word.
2 Cor 4:3-6.... But even if our Gospel (the glad tidings) also be hidden (obscured and covered up with a veil that hinders the knowledge of God), it is hidden [only] to those who are perishing and obscured [only] to those who are spiritually dying and veiled [only] to those who are lost. For the god of this world has blinded the unbelievers' minds [that they should not discern the truth], preventing them from seeing the illuminating light of the Gospel of the glory of Christ (the Messiah), Who is the Image and Likeness of God. For what we preach is not ourselves but Jesus Christ as Lord, and ourselves [merely] as your servants (slaves) for Jesus' sake. For God Who said, Let light shine out of darkness, has shone in our hearts so as [to beam forth] the Light for the illumination of the knowledge of the majesty and glory of God [as it is manifest in the Person and is revealed] in the face of Jesus Christ (the Messiah).
Eph 6:12.... For we are not wrestling with flesh and blood [contending only with physical opponents], but against the despotisms, against the powers, against [the master spirits who are] the world rulers of this present darkness, against the spirit forces of wickedness in the heavenly (supernatural) sphere.
Col 1:13-14.... [The Father] has delivered and drawn us to Himself out of the control and the dominion of darkness and has transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in Whom we have our redemption through His blood, [which means] the forgiveness of our sins.
1 Peter 2:9.... But you are a chosen race, a royal priesthood, a dedicated nation, [God's] own purchased, special people, that you may set forth the wonderful deeds and display the virtues and perfections of Him Who called you out of darkness into His marvelous light.
JOHN 1:1-14.... In the beginning [before all time] was the Word ( Christ), and the Word was with God, and the Word was God Himself. [Isa. 9:6] He was present originally with God. All things were made and came into existence through Him; and without Him was not even one thing made that has come into being. In Him was Life, and the Life was the Light of men. And the Light shines on in the darkness, for the darkness has never overpowered it [put it out or absorbed it or appropriated it, and is unreceptive to it].
6There came a man sent from God, whose name was John. [Mal. 3:1] This man came to witness, that he might testify of the Light, that all men might believe in it [adhere to it, trust it, and rely upon it] through him. He was not the Light himself, but came that he might bear witness regarding the Light.
9There it was--the true Light [was then] coming into the world [the genuine, perfect, steadfast Light] that illumines every person. [Isa. 49:6] He came into the world, and though the world was made through Him, the world did not recognize Him [did not know Him]. He came to that which belonged to Him [to His own--His domain, creation, things, world], and they who were His own did not receive Him and did not welcome Him. But to as many as did receive and welcome Him, He gave the authority (power, privilege, right) to become the children of God, that is, to those who believe in (adhere to, trust in, and rely on) His name – [Isa. 56:5] who owe their birth neither to bloods nor to the will of the flesh [that of physical impulse] nor to the will of man [that of a natural father], but to God. [They are born of God!]
14And the Word (Christ) became flesh (human, incarnate) and tabernacled (fixed His tent of flesh, lived awhile) among us; and we [actually] saw His glory (His honor, His majesty), such glory as an only begotten son receives from his father, full of grace (favor, loving-kindness) and truth. [Isa. 40:5]
JOHN 8:12.... Once more Jesus addressed the crowd. He said, I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not be walking in the dark, but will have the Light which is Life.
JOHN 12:44-46.... But Jesus loudly declared, The one who believes in Me does not [only] believe in and trust in and rely on Me, but [in believing in Me he believes] in Him Who sent Me. And whoever sees Me sees Him Who sent Me. I have come as a Light into the world, so that whoever believes in Me [whoever cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] may not continue to live in darkness.
EPHESIANS 1:17-23.... [For I always pray to] the God of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Father of glory, that He may grant you a spirit of wisdom and revelation [of insight into mysteries and secrets] in the [deep and intimate] knowledge of Him, by having the eyes of your heart flooded with light, so that you can know and understand the hope to which He has called you, and how rich is His glorious inheritance in the saints (His set-apart ones), and [so that you can know and understand] what is the immeasurable and unlimited and surpassing greatness of His power in and for us who believe, as demonstrated in the working of His mighty strength, which He exerted in Christ when He raised Him from the dead and seated Him at His [own] right hand in the heavenly [places], far above all rule and authority and power and dominion and every name that is named [above every title that can be conferred], not only in this age and in this world, but also in the age and the world which are to come. And He has put all things under His feet and has appointed Him the universal and supreme Head of the church [a headship exercised throughout the church], [Ps. 8:6] which is His body, the fullness of Him Who fills all in all [for in that body lives the full measure of Him Who makes everything complete, and Who fills everything everywhere with Himself].
COLOSSIANS 1:13-14.... [The Father] has delivered and drawn us to Himself out of the control and the dominion of darkness and has transferred us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in Whom we have our redemption through His blood, [which means] the forgiveness of our sins.
Jesus Himself gives us the true meaning of what it means to be the Light of the world when He spoke these words to the apostle Paul, "I am Jesus, Whom you are persecuting. But arise and stand upon your feet; for I have appeared to you for this purpose, that I might appoint you to serve as [My] minister and to bear witness both to what you have seen of Me and to that in which I will appear to you, choosing you out [selecting you for Myself] and delivering you from among this [Jewish] people and the Gentiles to whom I am sending you-- [Ezek. 2:1,3] to open their eyes that they may turn from darkness to light and from the power of Satan to God, so that they may thus receive forgiveness and release from their sins and a place and portion among those who are consecrated and purified by faith in Me" (Acts 26:15-18).
This darkness that Jesus spoke of is much worse than merely being without the sun, moon and stars, it has to do with the spiritual darkness that man is engulfed in through the influence of Satan, which is far, far worse. Under this influence or power of Satan man can become so corrupt that he is only fit for destruction. "The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination and intention of all human thinking was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved at heart. So the Lord said, I will destroy, blot out, and wipe away mankind, whom I have created from the face of the ground--not only man, [but] the beasts and the creeping things and the birds of the air--for it grieves Me and makes Me regretful that I have made them" (Gen. 6:5-7). The spiritual wickedness at that time was so great that there was no hope of turning them around; they had become blind and uncaring, thinking only of sensual, selfish gratification no matter who or what they had to destroy to obtain it.
This was the darkness that Jesus came to dispel by being the light and the burden-bearer to show us the way out of this horrible condition that we had degenerated into. Worse than any physical disease that we have ever known, and separating us from the love of God, this spiritual darkness left us without any hope of a meaningful, fulfilling life unless God intervened. As the time for the Lord’s return for the Church and the next fearful judgement draws near this deceptive spiritual darkness has increased to the point that very few, because they have neglected to grow in grace and the knowledge of our Lord Jesus Christ, have the necessary spiritual illumination or light to see the dangerous situation that this world is presently in.
Our only hope of escaping the spiritual deception that has engulfed the whole world is to accept Jesus’ invitation to follow Him: "Once more Jesus addressed the crowd. He said, I am the Light of the world. He who follows Me will not be walking in the dark, but will have the Light which is Life" (John 8:12). Then when we have made the choice to follow Him we need to also follow His advise if we hope to become and remain free. "So Jesus said to those Jews who had believed in Him, If you abide in My word [hold fast to My teachings and live in accordance with them], you are truly My disciples. And you will know the Truth, and the Truth will set you free" (John 8:31-32).
Jesus said, "I have come as a Light into the world, so that whoever believes in Me [whoever cleaves to and trusts in and relies on Me] may not continue to live in darkness" (John 12:46). What is this darkness like that Jesus promises to deliver us from? (1) Darkness makes it very difficult or even impossible to see what is going on around us, thus we are incapable of avoiding or understanding the danger that may be right in front of us, and Satan does everything he can to keep us in this condition (2 Cor. 4:4); (2) Continuing to dwell in darkness makes us confused and fearful, but when we are in Christ we are alerted not only to the dangers, but are made confident that we are also safe in the arms of God. This also simplifies our choices because we no longer have to consider the contrary foolishness of those who oppose God; and (3) Continuing to dwell in darkness will eventually bring God’s judgement upon us, but to abide or dwell in Christ saves us from this judgement and provides for our eternal existence with God.
As an example of how dangerous it is to continually neglect God’s instructions, consider what Jesus has to say below.
John 12:35-43.... So Jesus said to them, You will have the Light only a little while longer. Walk while you have the Light [keep on living by it], so that darkness may not overtake and overcome you. He who walks about in the dark does not know where he goes [he is drifting]. While you have the Light, believe in the Light [have faith in it, hold to it, rely on it], that you may become sons of the Light and be filled with Light. Jesus said these things, and then He went away and hid Himself from them [was lost to their view].
37Even though He had done so many miracles before them (right before their eyes), yet they still did not trust in Him and failed to believe in Him – so that what Isaiah the prophet said was fulfilled: Lord, who has believed our report and our message? And to whom has the arm (the power) of the Lord been shown (unveiled and revealed)? [Isa. 53:1] Therefore they could not believe [they were unable to believe]. For Isaiah has also said, He has blinded their eyes and hardened and benumbed their [callous, degenerated] hearts [He has made their minds dull], to keep them from seeing with their eyes and understanding with their hearts and minds and repenting and turning to Me to heal them. Isaiah said this because he saw His glory and spoke of Him. [Isa. 6:9,10]
There can come a time in our lives, if we stubbornly refuse to live by God’s instructions, that God Himself will blind our eyes to His truth and make it impossible for us to really understand what is happening and the proper course we should take. The Word of God will no longer have an entrance into the minds and hearts of those in this condition, leaving them at the mercy of Satan and his angels.
Another danger is the temptation to go along with those who are being used by the devil to fight against God, instead of exposing them. Many are doing that today because they don’t want to lose out on the worldly benefits that come from promoting popular people and organizations – just as they did in the verses recorded below.
42And yet [in spite of all this] many even of the leading men (the authorities and the nobles) believed and trusted in Him. But because of the Pharisees they did not confess it, for fear that [if they should acknowledge Him] they would be expelled from the synagogue; for they loved the approval and the praise and the glory that come from men [instead of and] more than the glory that comes from God. [They valued their credit with men more than their credit with God.]
It’s getting more and more difficult for people to recognize and accept the light and life that Jesus offers to every person; which suggests that God is about to turn this world over to Satan and judgement. Therefore, our task has become one of rescuing as many people as we can by giving them an opportunity to see and understand the glorious life that Jesus has to offer, so that some will be able to escape the darkness and enter into His glorious light and life.
