Bible, Science And Evolution

Since God is our creator, the most important of all sciences, or objects of study, is theology, the study of God. Theology, which was at one time accepted as "the queen of sciences" has in modern times been down-graded to become known as merely a branch of philosophy; theology itself also having many different branches or forms. Biblical theology should help us to have a better understanding of who God is and how He would have us to live.

The Bible doesn’t try to prove the existence of God, it just assumes that everyone is aware that God exists and is the creator of all that is. In fact the Bible declares that God has put within us an awareness of all this; "For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God [Himself] has shown it to them. For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification], [Ps. 19:1-4.] because when they knew and recognized Him as God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God or give Him thanks. But instead they became futile and godless in their thinking [with vain imaginings, foolish reasoning, and stupid speculations] and their senseless minds were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools [professing to be smart, they made simpletons of themselves]" (Rom. 1:19-22).

So when people say they don’t believe in God, they are just refusing to recognize or acknowledge the evidence that is within and around them. They may not know anything about God but they can always find out, because God has revealed Himself in His Word.

One of our major opposing worldviews is that of the futile and godless beliefs of the evolutionists:

One of the differences and thus problems between creationists and evolutionists is the insistence on the part of the evolutionists that science should not and cannot accept any assumption as fact that suggests the action or existence of God. Whereas, Dr. Henry Morris in his book The Biblical Basis For Modern Science shows that there are many concepts in modern science that are readily accepted by most practicing scientists that cannot be proven by man – he states:

Many recent scientists, even though they themselves are not creationists, are still willing to recognize the Christian, creationist origin of modern science. Entomologist Stanley Beck, an articulate anti-creationist, has acknowledged this fact "The first of the unprovable premises on which science has been based is the belief that the world is real and the human mind is capable of knowing its real nature. . . . The second and best known postulate underlying the structure of scientific knowledge is that of cause and effect. . . . The third basic scientific premise is that nature is unified. . . .

Beck acknowledges that they are essentially Christian in origin and nature. "These scientific premises define and limit the scientific mode of thought. It should be pointed out, however, that each of these postulates had its origin in, or was consistent with, Christian theology." p. 22

Dr. Morris goes on to say:

Why, then, should there be a conflict between Christian theology and true science? The fact is that there is no conflict, but the problem lies with modern evolutionary scientists, who have arbitrarily superimposed an additional, extraneous postulate in their current definition of science. Here is how Beck puts it: "Scientific thought soon parted from theology, because no assumption is made concerning any force outside or beyond natural measurable forces." That is, science is assumed to be, not only rational and causal and unified, but also naturalistic, banning by definition even the possibility of a supernatural First Cause of the rationality, causality, and unity of the universe with which science deals. But such an assumption is purely arbitrary (even emotional, as Isaac Asimov had admitted) and was certainly not held by the great scientists of the past, nor is it indicated by any actual scientific data. pp. 22-23 (emphasis mine)

Let’s examine the above comments in order to clarify some of what has been stated by Dr. Morris and by this eminent scholar Stanley Beck who is an anti-creationist, but who seems honest enough to relate to us the true account of the change being forced upon the definition and description of the field of science by the humanists.

He notes three unprovable premises (matters previously stated and assumed or taken for granted) or postulates (assumed or claimed as true) that have evidently been universally accepted as true science although they can’t be proven by anything known to man. I have read of many such things such as energy, gravity and the elements of the atom that man can name and use, but still doesn’t know what they really consist of or what they are. No person, except Christ, has ever or will ever perfectly know and understand anything, our knowledge is constantly being changed or upgraded and revised.

Dr. Morris goes on to explain that the effort of the evolutionary scientists to change the rules and definition of science is arbitrary (by this group’s sole discretion and not by any scientific precedent or former practice), and something extraneous (existing on or coming from the outside and without any traceable significant connection); they are trying to add new, unacceptable rules in an attempt to remove all supernatural consideration in the field of science, and to make only natural materialistic assumptions and considerations permissible. He then goes on to show that if this definition of science was used they would also have to discard the theory of evolution, because there being no factual evidence for evolution, their belief is just as metaphysical (of or relating to the transcendent or to a reality beyond what is perceptible to the senses) as Christianity is.

Scientists who reject evolution:

Dave Hunt in his article Evolution or God’s Word gives several reasons evolution should be rejected, here is a portion of that article:

Growing numbers of even non-Christian scientists oppose evolution. Astronomer/mathematician Sir Fred Hoyle says, "The scientific world has been bamboozled into believing that evolution has been proved. Nothing could be further from the truth." Biologist Michael Denton, author of Evolution: A Theory in Crisis, says science has so thoroughly discredited Darwinian evolution that it should be discarded. Mathematics professor Wolfgang Smith calls evolution "a metaphysical myth... totally bereft of scientific sanction...."

Colin Patterson, senior paleontologist at the British Museum of Natural History, confessed, after more than 20 years' involvement, "There was not one thing I knew about it. It's quite a shock to learn that one can be misled for so long." Patterson "started asking other scientists to tell him one thing they knew about evolution." Biologists at the American Museum of Natural History in New York were speechless. Says Patterson: "I tried that question on the geology staff at the Field Museum of Natural History and the only answer I got was silence. I tried it on the members of the Evolutionary Morphology Seminar in the University of Chicago, a very prestigious body of evolutionists, and all I got there was silence for a long time and eventually one person said, "I do know one thing--it ought not to be taught in high school."

If you or I had asked these or any other persons who teach the theory of evolution to tell us one thing they knew about evolution, you can be sure that we would be overwhelmed with comments supposedly supporting this theory. The reason that Colin Patterson didn’t receive a like reaction is because they knew that he was just as knowledgeable in this field as they were, therefore they didn’t try to fool or deceive him as they would with us. Don’t let yourself be overcome by the rhetoric of individuals who have merely learned to mimic the false instructions they have received from our humanist institutions. As Colin confessed, he had spent 20 years of his life pursuing an education in evolution only to find that it is false, no wonder God calls worldly wisdom foolishness!

The Long Time Period of Evolution and Geology:

The field of science that has probably been most effectively used by skeptics in attempting to discredit the Bible is geology, "the study of the earth." The analysis of the earth’s structure, especially the rocks that lie in the upper part of the earth’s crust, with their fossil contents, has been built into a rather elaborate naturalistic view of the origin and "history" of the earth – an origin and history vastly different from what is recorded in the Bible. While some elements of geology are certainly scientific, according to Dr. Morris historical geology that attempts to assign dates to the so-called geological ages is not. Therefore, anyone who is interested in trying to establish the earth’s timeline or age has two sources to examine; the writings and opinions of man, and God’s Word. As would be expected, the opinions of equally intelligent men vary greatly, from a few thousand years to billions of years; so it is not surprising to find that those who believe in evolution believe that the earth is billions of years old, while those who believe the Biblical record believe that the earth is only a few thousand years old. There is no scientific source available to man that can prove which of these beliefs are true, but those who believe in God can be confident that what God has revealed to us in His Word is absolutely true – for us the issue is settled.

Unfortunately, there are many who are unaware that neither evolution nor historical geology is scientifically founded but are only the theories of men, and as a result they allow themselves to be intimidated into believing the false claims of the evolutionists. Any true geological data fits the Biblical model far better than anything the evolutionists can come up with. It is therefore extremely foolish to reject the Word of God for the opinions of man. "For it is written, I will baffle and render useless and destroy the learning of the learned and the philosophy of the philosophers and the cleverness of the clever and the discernment of the discerning; I will frustrate and nullify [them] and bring [them] to nothing. [Isa. 29:14.] Where is the wise man (the philosopher)? Where is the scribe (the scholar)? Where is the investigator (the logician, the debater) of this present time and age? Has not God shown up the nonsense and the folly of this world's wisdom?" (1 Cor. 1:19-20).

An Example of Deliberate Deception By the Evolutionists:

A molecular biologist working on identifying genetic controls for diseases was interviewed by George Caylor of The Ledger, Lynchburg, Virginia. His article entitled, "The Biologist," appeared on February 17, 2000. In the interview he stated "I'm a bit like an editor, trying to find a spelling mistake inside a document larger than four complete sets of Encyclopedia Britannica." When asked if he believed this information evolved he said "George, nobody I know in my profession believes it evolved. It was engineered by `genius beyond genius,' and such information could not have been written any other way. The paper and ink did not write the book! Knowing what we know, it is ridiculous to think otherwise." When asked if he had ever stated this publically he said "No. I just say it evolved. To be a molecular biologist requires one to hold on to two insanities at all times. One, it would be insane to believe in evolution when you can see the truth for yourself. Two, it would be insane to say you don't believe in evolution. All government work, research grants, papers, big college lectures—everything would stop. I'd be out of a job, or relegated to the outer fringes where I couldn't earn a decent living." He further stated "Creation design. It's like an elephant in the living room. It moves around, takes up an enormous amount of space, loudly trumpets, bumps into us, knocks things over, eats a ton of hay, and smells like an elephant. And yet we have to swear it isn't there!"

This is just one example of why and how the ridiculous claims of evolution are deceptively promoted by our humanistic society. How pathetic that anyone would deliberately keep the truth from anyone else, and how tragic that it should be happening in our children’s classrooms! The only hope for our world is to develop and instill in our people an accurate Biblical Worldview based upon the Word of God. To illustrate this need, let’s consider the remarks of the above molecular biologist: First, he was unaware of anyone in the field of biology that believed that the genetic information that he was trying to decipher came into being through a process of evolution; second, the only way that such information could have come into existence is through an engineering genius, and only the God of the Bible fits that description; third, it’s ridiculous to have any other opinion; fourth, "it would be insane to believe in evolution when you can see the truth for yourself."

What this biologist is effectively saying is that one would have had to lost touch with reality in order to believe that evolution could have produced the multitudes of complexities that exist in the gigantic universe that God created. Whether we look at it through the telescopic lense of the astronomer, or the microscopic lense of the biologist, the results are the same – unity with great complexity that only God could have designed.

This evidence reveals the source of the humanistic evolutionary theory as being the enemy of our souls – Satan. It is and has never been a matter of trying to decide between differing truth claims, but between the truth of God and the lies of the devil. Therefore Satan has a definite advantage with the fallen nature of man "For the desires of the flesh are opposed to the [Holy] Spirit, and the [desires of the] Spirit are opposed to the flesh (godless human nature); for these are antagonistic to each other [continually withstanding and in conflict with each other], so that you are not free but are prevented from doing what you desire to do. But if you are guided (led) by the [Holy] Spirit, you are not subject to the Law" (Gal. 5:17-18). Satan appeals to our fallen sinful nature, God appeals to our regenerated spirit – "But I say, walk and live [habitually] in the [Holy] Spirit [responsive to and controlled and guided by the Spirit]; then you will certainly not gratify the cravings and desires of the flesh (of human nature without God)" (Gal. 5:16). We too should say with Joshua, choose today whom you will believe and follow – God or the devil (Jos. 24:15).

There is a war going on in society—a very real battle. The war is Christianity versus humanism, but we must wake up to the fact that, at the foundational level, it’s really creation versus evolution. . . . It wasn’t so very long ago that biblical creation was the basis of our society. Creation was taught in the universities and the school system. People automatically sent their children to Sunday school or similar places, so they would learn Christian absolutes. Even people who were not Christians, by and large, respected and obeyed these laws based upon the Bible. Sexual deviancy in all areas was outlawed. Abortion, in most instances, was considered murder. But, what happened? Charles Darwin popularized the theory of evolution. (There have always been evolutionary views opposing the true record of creation. Darwin did not originate the idea of evolution—he just popularized a particular version of it.) Evolution was promoted as science, but it is not science—it is a belief system about the past. The Church was caught off guard because it did not know how to handle the situation. Because they did not understand the true nature of science, many people believed that Darwinian evolution was science. And so this view of origins began to permeate our society.
