There are numerous good Christian ministries that are reporting on the many details or sub-reasons for our present world condition, but there is one reason that is basic to all – the apostle Paul explains below.
ROMANS 1:16-32.... For I am not ashamed of the Gospel (good news) of Christ, for it is God's power working unto salvation [for deliverance from eternal death] to everyone who believes with a personal trust and a confident surrender and firm reliance, to the Jew first and also to the Greek, for in the Gospel a righteousness which God ascribes is revealed, both springing from faith and leading to faith [disclosed through the way of faith that arouses to more faith]. As it is written, The man who through faith is just and upright shall live and shall live by faith. [Hab. 2:4.]
18For God's [holy] wrath and indignation are revealed from heaven against all ungodliness and unrighteousness of men, who in their wickedness repress and hinder the truth and make it inoperative. For that which is known about God is evident to them and made plain in their inner consciousness, because God [Himself] has shown it to them. For ever since the creation of the world His invisible nature and attributes, that is, His eternal power and divinity, have been made intelligible and clearly discernible in and through the things that have been made (His handiworks). So [men] are without excuse [altogether without any defense or justification], [Ps. 19:1-4.] because when they knew and recognized Him as God, they did not honor and glorify Him as God or give Him thanks. But instead they became futile and godless in their thinking [with vain imaginings, foolish reasoning, and stupid speculations] and their senseless minds were darkened. Claiming to be wise, they became fools [professing to be smart, they made simpletons of themselves]. And by them the glory and majesty and excellence of the immortal God were exchanged for and represented by images, resembling mortal man and birds and beasts and reptiles.
When people, either knowingly or unknowingly, repress or hinder God’s truth in the Bible, their minds cannot see or reason clearly and they are hindered from recognizing God’s enlightening truth – their senseless minds will reject it. If something doesn’t happen to cause them to turn unto the Lord for direction, their darkened, depraved condition will escalate, as each of the following paragraphs show, in a downward spiral into the region of darkness and despair.
24Therefore God gave them up in the lusts of their [own] hearts to sexual impurity, to the dishonoring of their bodies among themselves [abandoning them to the degrading power of sin], because they exchanged the truth of God for a lie and worshiped and served the creature rather than the Creator, Who is blessed forever! Amen (so be it). [Jer. 2:11.]
26For this reason God gave them over and abandoned them to vile affections and degrading passions. For their women exchanged their natural function for an unnatural and abnormal one, and the men also turned from natural relations with women and were set ablaze (burning out, consumed) with lust for one another--men committing shameful acts with men and suffering in their own bodies and personalities the inevitable consequences and penalty of their wrong-doing and going astray, which was [their] fitting retribution.
28And so, since they did not see fit to acknowledge God or approve of Him or consider Him worth the knowing, God gave them over to a base and condemned mind to do things not proper or decent but loathsome, until they were filled (permeated and saturated) with every kind of unrighteousness, iniquity, grasping and covetous greed, and malice. [They were] full of envy and jealousy, murder, strife, deceit and treachery, ill will and cruel ways. [They were] secret backbiters and gossipers, slanderers, hateful to and hating God, full of insolence, arrogance, [and] boasting; inventors of new forms of evil, disobedient and undutiful to parents. [They were] without understanding, conscienceless and faithless, heartless and loveless [and] merciless. Though they are fully aware of God's righteous decree that those who do such things deserve to die, they not only do them themselves but approve and applaud others who practice them.
As a person becomes more and more hardened to God and His instructions, God either increases the pressure upon him to repent, or He turns the person over to his own ungodly impulses. The life of such a person becomes as described above, and he in turn influences those around him and those he has any control over. The more our world is populated with this kind of people, and they gain control and influence over others, the more wicked this world will become.
For a person, and therefore the world to change, the ungodly influence must be exchanged for a Godly influence – the truth of God in His Word. If instead the person continues to choose ungodly influences and to respond to them, God will have to send judgement, just as He has required of His earthly representatives, as revealed below.
ROMANS 13:1-7.... LET EVERY person be loyally subject to the governing (civil) authorities. For there is no authority except from God [by His permission, His sanction], and those that exist do so by God's appointment. [Prov. 8:15.] Therefore he who resists and sets himself up against the authorities resists what God has appointed and arranged [in divine order]. And those who resist will bring down judgment upon themselves [receiving the penalty due them]. For civil authorities are not a terror to [people of] good conduct, but to [those of] bad behavior. Would you have no dread of him who is in authority? Then do what is right and you will receive his approval and commendation. For he is God's servant for your good. But if you do wrong, [you should dread him and] be afraid, for he does not bear and wear the sword for nothing. He is God's servant to execute His wrath (punishment, vengeance) on the wrongdoer. Therefore one must be subject, not only to avoid God's wrath and escape punishment, but also as a matter of principle and for the sake of conscience. For this same reason you pay taxes, for [the civil authorities] are official servants under God, devoting themselves to attending to this very service. Render to all men their dues. [Pay] taxes to whom taxes are due, revenue to whom revenue is due, respect to whom respect is due, and honor to whom honor is due.
When those in authority themselves become corrupt, then God will eventually bring judgement upon them.
PSALM 82:1-8.... GOD STANDS in the assembly [of the representatives] of God; in the midst of the magistrates or judges He gives judgment [as] among the gods. How long will you [magistrates or judges] judge unjustly and show partiality to the wicked? Selah [pause, and calmly think of that]! Do justice to the weak (poor) and fatherless; maintain the rights of the afflicted and needy. Deliver the poor and needy; rescue them out of the hand of the wicked.
5[The magistrates and judges] know not, neither will they understand; they walk on in the darkness [of complacent satisfaction]; all the foundations of the earth [the fundamental principles upon which rests the administration of justice] are shaking. I said, You are gods [since you judge on My behalf, as My representatives]; indeed, all of you are children of the Most High. [John 10:34-36; Rom. 13:1,2.] But you shall die as men and fall as one of the princes. Arise, O God, judge the earth! For to You belong all the nations. [Rev. 11:15.]
So, why is the world in its present condition? Because those in authority, who are supposed to rule for the good of the people and according to God’s Word, have instead rejected God and His Word, accepted the false philosophies of the ungodly, become corrupt through the process we examined above, and are now destroying any hope for a just and peaceful existence; some of the most influential people and organizations in the world have rejected God and His Word, and are relying upon their own foolish wisdom and understanding which are causing, in God’s words, "all the foundations of the earth [the fundamental principles upon which rests the administration of justice]" to shake.
Summation points:
1. This is God’s world, He created it, and as Psalm 82:8 states above, it belongs to Him and He will eventually judge it as He did once before when He flooded the whole earth and destroyed every air breathing thing except those who were on the ark with Noah (Gen. chapter seven).
2. God has commanded those whom He puts into civil service to follow His instructions and to control, correct and punish wrong doers, as we have seen in Romans 13:1-7.
3. God has told us in His Word that He is the one who puts people in places of authority, and that it is His business alone to judge and govern the world. The work He has given Christians is to take care of matters in our families and the local church we attend; see our webpage, Human Authority And Christian Responsibility. Our responsibility in our families and local church are to faithfully proclaim and live the truth as God has revealed it unto us in His Word.
4. If we would faithfully attend to the duties God has given us, our families and church members would be properly trained in godly living, and would in turn influence those they come in contact with in their daily walk. Unfortunately, too often Christians neglect what God has assigned to them and mess around instead in what is clearly God’s business – the world! This neglect and misguided Christian involvement are what has caused the world to be largely populated by those who know not and care not about God, and as these people get into places of authority they create the condition that the world is in. The condition that the world is presently in is not God’s fault; it is the direct result of our failure to make disciples according to Jesus’ instructions: "Jesus approached and, breaking the silence, said to them, All authority (all power of rule) in heaven and on earth has been given to Me. Go then and make disciples of all the nations, baptizing them into the name of the Father and of the Son and of the Holy Spirit, teaching them to observe everything that I have commanded you, and behold, I am with you all the days ( perpetually, uniformly, and on every occasion), to the [very] close and consummation of the age. Amen" (Matt. 28:18-20).
Now someone is surely going to ask, then why does God place them, or allow them to get into these places of authority? See, I told you, now we are beginning to mess around in God’s business. Don’t you think that God knows what He is doing? God knows the beginning to the end, but we are limited to what has been and half the time we can’t even get that right. If we could see ahead as God does, every choice and appointment that He has made would make perfect sense. It is not our place to question the way that God rules, nor to attempt, without His approval, to alter what He has established. Be very thankful that God is truly in control!
