There are some, belonging to man-made schools of theology and using faulty systems of interpreting Scripture, who have suggested that the sons of God mentioned in Gen. 6:2 are actually angels who married women and giants were born of them. The man-made rule that causes many of these people to believe this false doctrine, is that if the two Hebrew words that are translated into English as ‘sons of God’ are not used in reference to human beings before the writing of Gen. 6:2, then they cannot be referring to men here; even though they are used in reference to men later on in Scripture. The term is used of angels in Job 1:6; 2:1, and 38:7, and in Dan. 3:25. It is used referring to human beings in Ps. 73:15; Deut. 32:5; Hos. 1:10 and Ps. 80:17. When people rely on their own understanding instead of rightly understanding and presenting the whole of God’s Word, they usually end up overlooking contrary Scripture, undermining the Word of God and spreading false teachings.
There is nothing in the Bible about angels being able to have sexual relations with women, so, the reference in Gen. 6:1-7 to the sons of God producing giants must refer to the Godly line of Seth, the third son of Adam and Eve. Furthermore, the various species of God’s creation are not able to crossbreed, and humans and angels are certainly different species. We will use the following passages of Scripture to examine this issue.
GENESIS 6:1-7.... WHEN MEN began to multiply on the face of the land and daughters were born to them, the sons of God saw that the daughters of men were fair, and they took wives of all they desired and chose. Then the Lord said, My Spirit shall not forever dwell and strive with man, for he also is flesh; but his days shall yet be 120 years. There were giants on the earth in those days--and also afterward--when the sons of God lived with the daughters of men, and they bore children to them. These were the mighty men who were of old, men of renown. The Lord saw that the wickedness of man was great in the earth, and that every imagination and intention of all human thinking was only evil continually. And the Lord regretted that He had made man on the earth, and He was grieved at heart. So the Lord said, I will destroy, blot out, and wipe away mankind, whom I have created from the face of the ground--not only man, [but] the beasts and the creeping things and the birds of the air--for it grieves Me and makes Me regretful that I have made them.
MATTHEW 22:29-30.... But Jesus replied to them, You are wrong because you know neither the Scriptures nor God's power. For in the resurrected state neither do [men] marry nor are [women] given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven.
MARK 12:24-25.... Jesus said to them, Is not this where you wander out of the way and go wrong, because you know neither the Scriptures nor the power of God? For when they arise from among the dead, [men] do not marry nor are [women] given in marriage, but are like the angels in heaven.
LUKE 20:34-36.... And Jesus said to them, The people of this world and present age marry and are given in marriage; but those who are considered worthy to gain that other world and that future age and to attain to the resurrection from the dead neither marry nor are given in marriage; for they cannot die again, but they are angel-like and equal to angels. And being sons of and sharers in the resurrection, they are sons of God.
When we consider the above four passages of Scriptures together, the most likely conclusions that we can come to are that the godly line of Seth, in disobedience to God, chose some of the attractive daughters of the ungodly line of Cain as wives. In expressing His displeasure with the many who now had mixed marriages, God warns these rebels that His Spirit will not always strive or attempt to bring them back into a right relationship with Himself, and then reduces or restricts men’s life-span to 120 years. God saw this as necessary because the men who lived in those days had great potential and ability, and instead of using their ability to accomplish good deeds, they were using it to further their rebellion and disobedience to God until the whole earth was filled with violence and corruption. As a result God decided to destroy all but those who would accompany Noah on the ark.
When Jesus was asked, in the three Gospel references above, which husband would have a woman as wife in heaven who had been married to several husbands on earth, Jesus responded in the following way. ". . . in the resurrected state neither do [men] marry nor are [women] given in marriage, but they are like the angels in heaven." And the reason that He gives is ". . . for they cannot die again but they are angel-like and equal to angels." That Jesus would state that they will never marry nor die also means that they will never be able to produce children – and neither can the angels.
If there were new births in heaven, then these newborns would have to go through a similar teaching and training program as we on earth have gone through to determine who among them would be willing to live for God instead of themselves. In order for us to get a better understanding of why this is so, let us consider a simplified view of God’s original plans.
"In the beginning God (prepared, formed, fashioned, and) created the heavens and the earth" (Gen. 1:1). God created the cosmos and then took some of the elements thereof and created living life forms and formed and fashioned a perfect environment for them to live in. He apparently had and has a perfect civilization in mind where everyone worked and co-operated with Him to make life an amazingly wonderful and beautiful experience; in the Bible He calls it the Kingdom of God or of heaven.
God wants and desires creatures that He has created to willfully volunteer to help Him in building and managing His kingdom, so he created them all, angels and humans, as free-agents – able to live for Him or for themselves. In this way He allows us to be tempted and tried in order to separate those who are truly willing to live in obedience to Him from the disobedient. As far as we know, Satan was the first to make the decision to live for himself instead of for God, and Adam was soon enticed to followed him (Gen. 3:1-19).
God’s wonderful plan had been rejected by both angels and humans, and the terrible consequences of those decisions have spoiled and desecrated God’s original plan and works, but God, all the time, had a backup plan in place – God was not surprised, He knew what was going to happen (1 Peter 1:18-20). So all the ugliness, pain and suffering that we see and experience in today’s world is the result of creatures that were first created in God’s image, but eventually rejected and rebelled against Him.
God tells us that He created the universe and all that is within it; that Adam and Eve disobeyed His instructions and thus lost their close relationship with God; that everyone born after that was born in the same condition as Adam and Eve – separated from God and descended for hell; that God sent the second person of the Trinity, Christ Jesus His Son, to bring us back into a right relationship with God (reconciliation); and that anyone who will turn away from or reject their sinful way of living, believes this simple Gospel story and receives Jesus as their personal Lord and Savior – will receive God’s gift of eternal life.
But in giving a simple explanation of why people are born separated from God and descended for hell, some may be tempted to question God's goodness and fairness in passing such a severe sentence upon merely eating from a forbidden tree. But if we read in God's Word of the result of this forbidden act and what it lead to, and examine and think through the horrible evil acts, pain and suffering that we see in the world today, we will begin to realize that disobedience of God's commands is no small or insignificant matter. After about 1656 years the world had become so evil (Gen. 6:1-13) that it grieved God that He had created it, so He destroyed every air-breathing creature that He had created except those on the ark with Noah. Any reasonable thinking person can easily see that if God let unredeemed, sinful people into a perfect heaven it would only be a short time until they would make it as corrupt as the perfect world that He had created in the first place. So, it would not be good or kind or loving for God to allow unconverted sinners into heaven!
Those who receive Jesus Christ as their personal Lord and Savior will be privileged to enter into heaven when their physical bodies die, or Jesus comes to take the Church back with Him to His Father’s house (Jn. 14:1-3). There they will experience a perfect environment, probably free of trials and testings and new births. I mention no new births because they in turn would then need to be tested and tried as the rest of mankind had been; this is one reason that the devil was only locked up in the Abyss until the end of the millennium instead of being thrown directly into the lake of fire – to determine if those born during the millennium would willingly follow Christ when the devil is released for a short time at the end of that period.
